This festive season's favourite family experience, Rodgers and Hammerstein's legendary musical, The Sound Of Music, is on stage at the Artscape Opera House, from 14 December to 14 January, presented by Pieter Toerien with Cape Town Opera.

"The way people love this musical is quite astonishing. I get stopped in the street, and people take the time to tell me that they have booked their tickets and can’t wait to see it again. The Sound Of Music is not just a show, it's almost a favourite friend, loved by people around the world. The future of musical theatre is certainly looking very bright indeed.”, says Toerien.
Directed by Steven Stead (Camelot, Into The Woods, Sweeney Todd), this lavish production stars Brittany Smith as Maria Rainer, Craig Urbani as Captain von Trapp, Janelle Visagie as Mother Abbess, Nadia Beukes as Baroness von Schraeder, William Berger as Max Dietweiler, Ché-Jean Jupp as Rolf Gruber, and Ashley Scott as Liesl von Trapp.
The supporting cast includes the finest local stage performers, and introduces Cape Town to 18 brand-new, young performers who play the scene-stealing von Trapp children.
With musical direction by Kevin Kraak, the show includes songs such as "I Have Confidence", Do-Re-Mi", "So Long, Farewell", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", Sixteen Going On Seventeen", Edelweiss", and of course the title song, "The Sound Of Music". The show offers enchanting visuals, with set design by Denis Hutchinson, lighting design by Faheem Bardien, costumes coordinated by Maritha Visagie, and choreography by Duane Alexander. Sound design is by Mark Malherbe.

The inspirational story, based on the memoir of Maria Von Trapp, follows a young nun in-training, who serves as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain von Trapp, bringing music and joy to the household. But as the forces of Nazism take hold of Austria, Maria and the entire Von Trapp family must make a moral decision.
The original stage production won six Tony awards, including Best Musical, and was then adapted into the five-time Oscar-winning film, which went on to become the most-successful movie musical of all time.
Don't miss The Sound Of Music, presented for a whole new generation of musical fans.
