Patrick Marber’s CLOSER remains a powerful exploration of love’s beauty and cruelty. It

is a sharp, emotionally raw play exploring love, desire, betrayal, and the complexities of modern relationships. Set in London, the story follows four strangers whose lives become entangled in a web of passion and heartbreak, exposing the complexities of human relationships with ruthless honesty. It follows four characters —Alice, Dan, Anna, and Larry— whose lives become entangled in a web of attraction, deception, and heartbreak. Through a series of intense, often brutal interactions, Marber examines the fluidity of human connection, exposing the pain and longing beneath seemingly passionate relationships.

Since its premiere in 1997, CLOSER has been hailed as one of the most powerful plays of modern theatre, earning the Olivier Award for Best New Play. CLOSER dissects the psychological and emotional games people play in their pursuit of intimacy, ultimately questioning whether true honesty is possible in relationships. Its raw intensity and unflinching look at human nature have made it a modern classic, winning multiple awards and inspiring a celebrated 2004 film adaptation. CLOSER remains a powerful exploration of love’s beauty and cruelty.

Together they tackle dialogue that is fast-paced, witty, and brutally honest, capturing the intoxicating highs and devastating lows of love and lust.

“We are thrilled to bring CLOSER to Theatre Arts,” said Robertson. “This play is an emotional rollercoaster that challenges audiences to confront the realities of love and longing in a way that is both poignant and profound.”
