Spier is celebrating the annual grape harvest with a weekend festival of cultural abundance to delight the soul and senses on Saturday 25 February and Sunday 26 February 2023.
Third World Bunfight that runs the performing arts program with Spier, has devised a diverse programme with top local artists to create an intriguing, spirited all-day festival. The event is in keeping with the historic Stellenbosch wine farm’s progressive policy of supporting performing arts of high quality and artistic integrity.
Musicians include The One Who Sings - Zolani Mahola (pictured); the internationally-lauded multi-instrumentalist Guy Buttery; the jazzy Adamu Trio featuring Adamu da Silva, Buddy Wells and Jonno Sweetman; laid-back Indie-rock outfit Jak Tomas and the Rebellion; soulful balladeer Wren Hinds; indigenous African music combo, iiNceba zoMdali featuring Ncebakazi Mnukwana, Lungiswa Plaatjies, Kim Masala and Bongani Nikelo; the ‘world beat’ duo Mindcircle: Ronan Skillen and Ben Badenhorst; and the Bongani Singers choir.
Children will be enchanted by How to Hold the World, a production written and directed by Juliette Rose-Innes and featuring James Stoffberg will be presented each day at noon.
Away from the main stage, in quiet nooks under the oaks, guests can attend afternoon poetry and short story readings take place, given by local writers such as Kobus Moolman, Sindiswa Busuku, Toast Coetzer, (pictured) Dominique Botha, Jacques Coetzee, Lester Warbrugh, Diane Awerbuck and Nondwe Puma, and people can gather for a collective meditation on the river bank each evening. A spectacular thanksgiving ritual featuring the Tierra Flamenca Spanish dancers and an ensemble of percussionists will precede the sunset concert.
“Spier is about good wine, a healthy earth and happy people. We reflect all of that with the works we will program here, where artistic merit and cultural richness are championed, two elements we cherish above all else.” says artistic director, Brett Bailey.
