The Masque is proud to present Agatha Christie's Murder on the Nile. The production will be performed from 21 to 31 August 2024.
From award-winning director Barbara Basel, this classic Christie play is sure to set the stage alight. It has all the twists and turns that this iconic author and playwright is known for - a beautiful heiress on her honeymoon, the working class man she married, a foreigner with a grudge, the jealous ex-fiancé who can't stop following her ex, a man who isn't who or what he claims to be, a religious man who knows more than he lets on, and a lady's maid who had to have seen more than she claims.
All of them are thrown together, caught on a luxury paddle steamer as it makes its way up the Nile. Who could the murderer be? It has to be one of them! Or maybe it was the ship's steward...
Join The Masque for a murder mystery that will have you asking "whodunnit" right to the very end!
“Agatha Christie is a vital part of the community theatre world, and we had to have a classic whodunnit from the master as we celebrate 65 years at The Masque this year,” says Faeron Wheeler, Head of Programming at The Masque.
“This is the first time I’m directing an Agatha Christie murder mystery, although I have acted in a couple of them in the past, so I’m very excited about the opportunities it provides,” says director Barbara Basel.
“I‘m very keen to capture the splendour and hypocrisy of that era, plus the play’s satirical humour and, at times, antiquated dialogue, while ensuring that the performance will still capture the attention of today’s audience.”
Basel won several CATAs for last year’s production of Twelfth Night, including Best Director and Best Play.
The production features: Lara Serene Fouche as Kay Ridgeway; Timothy Wolfaardt as Simon Mostyn; Sarah-Kate Bergstedt as Jacqueline De Severac; Wayne Ronné as Canon Pennefather; Matthew dos Santos as William Smith; Su Cunningham as Helen ffoliot-ffoulkes; Roux Nel as Christina Grant; Kendal Conradie as Dr Ludwig Bessner; Christine Swanepole as Louise, and Sfiso Nkosi as Steward/McNaught.
Barbara Basel has taught, acted in and directed dramas for as long as she can remember. Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Nile is her 11th production at the Masque since 2011, having directed serious plays such as Road to Mecca and comedies such as The Importance of Being Earnest, her last one being the popular and multi-award winning Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare in July 2023. She has also acted in various plays at the Masque, the latest being a cameo role in Calendar Girls.
Murder on the Nile will be performed from 21 August until 31 August.
